Within linear media such as film and animation, you have full control over the sound. You know exactly what the viewer will see and what sounds will play when.
Sound in film gives the opportunity to tell the story that plays just outside of the frame: horses galloping away, a crowd cheering around you, the burning fire or monster roar next to you.
Animation is a very appealing way to transfer information or to tell a story with, but the full potential is only revealed when the movements are supported by fitting sound effects.
